HYPNOTHERAPY & Counselling FOR PERSONAL & SEXUAL PROBLEMS
ARE SEXUAL PROBLEMS COMMON?
Issues with sex are very common, around 1 in 10 men and 1 in 3 women experience sexual problems at some point in their lives*. It can affect anyone indiscriminate of age, sexuality or gender and is often accompanied by shame or embarrassment due to these issues not being widely discussed in our society. Here are some common sexual issues that a lot of people will experience:
Premature ejaculation - when a man ejaculates sooner than intended and is only a problem if it bothers him or his partner. This can be caused by anxiety about sexual performance, stress, depression or unresolved relationship issues.
Erectile dysfunction - when a man cannot get or keep an erection. Most men experience it at some point in their lives and the causes can be physical or psychological. Psychological reasons can include anxiety, depression and worries about work, money or many other factors.
Reduced or loss of sex drive - this is when a person has little interest in sex and little to no sexual thoughts. It can happen for many reasons such as depression, relationship issues, a reaction to mental or physical trauma and tiredness.
Vaginismus - when the muscles in or around the vagina go in to spasm meaning sex is painful or impossible. This can be caused by the association of sex with pain, vaginal trauma, relationship problems or fear of pregnancy.
Anorgasmia - when a person can’t orgasm. This is divided into two categories; primary - when a person has never been able to orgasm and secondary - when a person could previously orgasm but now cannot. This can be caused by fear or lack of knowledge about sex, depression, stress, being unable to ‘let go’, relationship problems and/or previous traumatic sexual experience.
Please note that hypnotherapy and counselling can not be used to treat medical issues, please visit your GP to find out what the likely causes are before starting your hypnotherapy sessions.
HYPNOTHERAPY FOR SEXUAL PROBLEMS
Hypnosis for problems with sex is effective when the cause of the issue is psychological. Problems like premature ejaculation and anorgasmia can be treated by identifying the root of the issue and addressing it through relaxation and positive suggestion.
Hypnotherapy will address your underlying and limiting beliefs and/or your perception of a trauma in your past that is blocking sexual function. Once these beliefs and experiences are addressed, your therapist will use suggestion to change your subconscious negative thoughts around sex to positive ones.
COUNSELLING FOR SEXUAL PROBLEMS
If the root of your sexual block lies in relationship issues, it may also be helpful to talk to a counsellor either on your own or if relevant, with your partner. Here are a few possible causes which can be helped with counselling:
Low self-esteem can cause anxiety, which can negatively affect our experience of sex, in turn, feeding our anxiety and negative beliefs about ourselves.
Feeling discontent with our physical appearance can make us feel overly self-conscious during sex and be unable to ‘let go’.
Historic relationship stress can be a big factor in our ability to focus on the sexual experience and detach ourselves from resentments and negative feelings towards our partner.
Past experiences can play a vital role in the barriers we put up to protect ourselves from being hurt, this behaviour keeps us at a distance from our partner which can negatively affect the sexual experience.
Your counsellor will work with you to identify the causes of your issues and challenge the beliefs you hold which are preventing you from having a fulfilled sex life.
